ACI World Announces the Busiest Airports, Seoul Incheon Airport ranked 7th busiest International airport
The Airports Council International World (ACI World) recently announced the list of the world's busiest airports for 2023, indicating a vibrant recovery of international air travel. According to the announcement, global passenger numbers reached nearly 8.5 billion, recovering to 93.8% of pre-pandemic levels in 2023. Notably, South Korea's Incheon Airport was ranked as the 7th busiest airport for international flights.
The increase in passenger traffic at major hub airports, which rely heavily on international travel, had a decisive impact on the top 10 airport rankings. ACI World's Secretary General, Luis Felipe de Oliveira, stated, "The growth of the global air travel sector was primarily driven by international factors, including the anticipated effects of China's reopening and the increase in desire to travel despite economic difficulties."
In terms of total passengers, including both international and domestic flights, major airports in the USA continued to dominate the top ranks, with Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport once again at the top. However, this year saw notable changes, such as Dubai International Airport securing the 2nd place for the first time. Tokyo Haneda International Airport significantly rose to the 5th place compared to last year. Istanbul and New Delhi airports also maintained their top positions based on steady performance.
In the cargo transport sector, Hong Kong International Airport remains in the lead, despite annual decreases, followed by Memphis and Shanghai Pudong International Airports. Doha International Airport re-entered the top 10 with a 6.3% growth compared to 2019.
ACI World, or the Airports Council International World, was established in 1991 and is a global organization representing airports worldwide. ACI World collaborates with over 1,900 airports globally, covering more than 95% of the world's air travelers. It promotes the sustainable development of airports worldwide, improves the efficiency of airport operations, and enhances the safety and security of air travel through various programs and services.
