Mega LED Screens Transform Seoul into 'K-Times Square' Landmarks

According to Yonhap News TV, Seoul South Korea is entering a new era of urban media with the rollout of giant LED billboards at Gwanghwamun and Seoul Station, following the precedent set at COEX.

At KT Square, five massive LED screens have been installed on the KT building, with a total size equivalent to four basketball courts. Their high resolution is already turning the square into a vibrant night-time hub, with citizens gathering to admire the dazzling display. The area has also been designated as a Free OOH Advertising Zone, easing restrictions on size, shape, and installation methods. Authorities expect this shift to foster creative advertising while establishing new urban landmarks.

COEX, the first Free OOH Advertising Zone in Seoul since 2016, has already gained global attention through its giant LED façade, most recently featuring Netflix’s animation K-Pop Demon Hunters. Building on this success, city officials and private operators are now expanding the concept into other high-traffic hubs.

At Seoul Station, one of the busiest transport nodes in the country with roughly 120 million annual users, a new horizontal LED screen stretches 111 meters across the concourse. Operated by Kakao Mobility, the display is designed not only as an advertising medium but also as a stage for digital art. The company plans to showcase differentiated content, including immersive 3D media art, while linking the screen into a nationwide data-driven advertising network.

With these developments, Gwanghwamun and Seoul Station are expected to emerge as cultural and commercial landmarks on par with New York’s Times Square, underscoring Seoul’s ambition to boost tourism, strengthen the advertising industry, and redefine the urban media landscape.
