Seoul to light up with Smart Media Poles in Myeongdong
Seoul’s Myeongdong area is getting a high-tech upgrade. The city’s Jung-gu district has started installing "Smart Media Poles" to turn the popular shopping street into a digital night-time attraction, similar to Times Square in New York.
These media poles replace old streetlights. They include digital screens, CCTV, public Wi-Fi, and emergency buttons. People can see weather updates, air quality levels, local event info, and digital art. If someone presses the emergency button, it connects directly to the police or the city’s control center.
Fourteen large poles will be placed on Namdaemun-ro, a main road near Shinsegae Department Store. Smaller poles will go in Myeongdong’s narrow streets to help keep people safe and give useful information. Two special poles will help guide tourists near Myeongdong Theater and the subway exit.
The city has designed the poles carefully to avoid blocking views or creating light pollution. Brightness and angle were adjusted to fit the area’s look.
In the future, people might be able to send their own videos or pictures to show on the poles using QR codes. The system can also show live footage from other cities that have media poles.
The project uses a "build and donate" model in South Korea. Private companies pay to install the poles and make money through ads. A part of the ad income goes back to the local government to help support the community.
This is part of the bigger “Myeongdong Square” plan. More large digital billboards will be added to nearby buildings like Lotte Young Plaza and Hana Bank. The city hopes this will make Myeongdong a famous digital media spot, bringing new life to the area’s businesses, especially at night.
